{"id":659,"date":"2014-11-04T15:46:53","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T15:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=659"},"modified":"2014-11-04T15:47:17","modified_gmt":"2014-11-04T15:47:17","slug":"659","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=659","title":{"rendered":"Volleyball woman &#8216;on hunger strike&#8217; in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/g\/ghoncheh-ghawami-180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"193\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ghoncheh Ghawami<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">04 Nov 2014 -Aljazeera- British-Iranian woman, jailed for trying to attend men&#8217;s volleyball match, is protesting against her detention.<br \/>\nA British-Iranian woman jailed in Iran after trying to watch a volleyball match is on a hunger strike for the second time, reports say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->Ghoncheh Ghavami\u00a0was sentenced to a year in jail after attempting to attend a men&#8217;s volleyball match between Iran and Italy in Tehran in June, her lawyer told Iranian media.<br \/>\nThe \u00a025-year-old law graduate from London, is protesting against what she called her &#8220;illegal detention&#8221;, her mother told the BBC.<br \/>\nWoman are banned from attending volleyball and football matches in Iran, which officials say protects them from lewd behaviour.<br \/>\nShe was arrested on June 20 outside Tehran&#8217;s Azadi Stadium, where she was taking part in a demonstration demanding that women be allowed inside to watch the international league match.<br \/>\nGhavami\u00a0was released soon after, but then re-arrested days later when she was called back to reclaim items that had been confiscated when she was first detained.<br \/>\nThe status of Ghavami&#8217;s case is uncertain because prosecutors have not confirmed her sentence, according to the broadcaster.<br \/>\nGhavami previously went on a hunger strike for two weeks before her sentencing, when she was detained for months before going on trial behind closed doors.<br \/>\nThe human rights group Amnesty International says she has been held at Evin prison, which has a reputation for brutality, and has spent time in solitary confinement.<br \/>\nIran does not recognise dual citizenship and treats dual nationals as Iranians.<br \/>\nDespite an international outcry against the case, last month, a 26-year-old Iranian woman was executed in Tehran for killing a man who she said had tried to sexually abuse her.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>04 Nov 2014 -Aljazeera- British-Iranian woman, jailed for trying to attend men&#8217;s volleyball match, is protesting against her detention.
