{"id":1867,"date":"2022-10-03T18:02:50","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T18:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1867"},"modified":"2022-10-03T18:06:02","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T18:06:02","slug":"iran-protests-riot-police-use-teargas-on-students-at-sharif-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1867","title":{"rendered":"Iran protests: riot police use teargas on students at Sharif university"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 1250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/i\/ir-protest-22-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1240\" height=\"744\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini have continued to intensify in Iran despite crackdowns by the authorities Photograph: Contributor\/072019\/Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Unverified social media videos show security forces firing teargas amid reports some students are trapped in campus car park<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mon 3 Oct 2022- Guardian-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iranian security forces have clashed with students at a prominent university in Tehran, social and state media reported, in the latest sign of a deadly clampdown on nationwide protests that were ignited by the death in custody of a young woman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->The anti-government protests, which began at 22-year-old Mahsa Amini\u2019s funeral on 17 September in the Kurdish town of Saqez, have spiralled into the biggest show of opposition to Iran\u2019s authorities in years, with many calling for the end of more than four decades of Islamic clerical rule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has about 160,000 followers, posted several videos showing Sharif University, traditionally a hotbed of dissent, surrounded by dozens of riot police on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>\u2018Women, life, liberty\u2019:<\/strong><\/em> Iranian civil rights protests spread worldwide<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the videos showed security forces firing teargas to drive the students off the campus and the sound of what appeared to be shooting at a distance could be heard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another video showed security forces chasing dozens of students trapped in the university\u2019s underground parking. The account said dozens of students had been arrested.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iranian state media described \u201creports of clashes\u201d at the university and said the country\u2019s science minister visited the campus to check on the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reuters could not independently verify the events at the university.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students had been protesting at numerous universities on Sunday and demonstrations were held in several cities such as Tehran, Yazd, Kermanshah, Sanandaj, Shiraz and Mashhad, with participants chanting \u201cindependence, freedom, death to Khamenei,\u201d earlier social media posts showed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The protests have not abated despite a growing death toll and the crackdown by security forces using teargas, clubs, and in some cases, according to videos on social media and rights groups, live ammunition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iran Human Rights, a Norway-based group, in a statement said that \u201cso far 133 people had been killed across Iran\u201c, including more than 40 people it said died in clashes last week in Zahedan, capital of the south-eastern Sistan-Baluchistan province.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iranian authorities have not given a death toll, while saying many members of the security forces have been killed by \u201crioters and thugs backed by foreign foes\u201c. Last week state television said 41 had died, including members of the security forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iran\u2019s utmost authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has not commented on the nationwide protests, which have spread to Iran\u2019s 31 provinces, with all layers of society, including ethnic and religious minorities, taking part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amini\u2019s death and the crackdown have drawn international criticism of Iran\u2019s rulers, who in turn accuse the United States and some European countries of exploiting the unrest to try to destabilise the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iranian state media shared a video of pro-government students, who gathered at the Ferdowsi university in Mashhad, chanting \u201cthe Islamic Republic is our red line\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier on Sunday, Iranian lawmakers chanted \u201cthank you, police\u201d during a parliament session, in a show of support for a crackdown on widespread anti-government protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amini was arrested on 13 September in Tehran for \u201cunsuitable attire\u201d by the morality police who enforce the Islamic Republic\u2019s strict dress code. She died three days later in hospital after falling into a coma.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lawyer for Amini\u2019s family, Saleh Nikbakht, told the semi-official Etemadonline news website that \u201crespectable doctors\u201d believe she was hit in custody. Amini\u2019s autopsy report and other medical details have not been released, but her father said he saw bruises on her leg and that other women detained with her said she was beaten.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iran\u2019s police authorities say Amini died of a heart attack and deny she was beaten to death in custody.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The country\u2019s hardline president Ebrahim Raisi has ordered an investigation into Amini\u2019s death.
