{"id":1816,"date":"2022-05-09T21:51:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T21:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1816"},"modified":"2022-05-22T22:02:20","modified_gmt":"2022-05-22T22:02:20","slug":"internet-shutdown-heavy-security-presence-signal-lethal-state-repression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1816","title":{"rendered":"Internet Shutdown, Heavy Security Presence Signal Lethal State Repression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/i\/ir-protest-22-1.jpg\" \/>May 9, 2022 \u2013 Government-enforced internet outages and the increased presence of state security forces throughout the Iranian province of Khuzestan, where street protests erupted on May 6, have raised fears over another deadly crackdown in the Islamic Republic.<\/span><!--more--><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIranian state forces used live ammunition and killed peaceful protesters in Khuzestan a year ago, and they appear to be gearing up for a bloody repeat,\u201d said Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cState-enforced internet outages are a warning sign that the Iranian authorities are preparing to use deadly force, and want to hide this violence from the world,\u201d Ghaemi added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">CHRI calls on officials who are in talks with the Iranian government, the UN, and human rights organizations to urgently call on the Islamic Republic to stop unleashing its military on the people of Iran, in violation of their right to peaceful protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">State Responds to Food Price Protests with Iron Fist, Internet Blockade<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bread prices have risen sharply amid Iran\u2019s above 40-percent inflation rate, while consumers are seeing cooking essentials including oil and sugar disappear from shelves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Residents of the oil-rich province of Khuzestan have also been dealing with severe dust storms and water shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">CHRI was informed by multiple sources in Khuzestan that internet disruptions began throughout the province midday on May 6 and have continued, along with a large state security force that moved into the province on May 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe problem persists in several cities [in Khuzestan Province] such as Ahvaz, Izeh, and Susangerd, including no internet access on mobile phones,\u201d said a source in the city of Izeh who requested anonymity for security reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe security forces initially prevented any gatherings, but the people grew in number and the forces fired shots into the air several times,\u201d added the source. \u201cAll the slogans were about inflation, especially the increase in the price of bread.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A source in Ahvaz confirmed the increased state security presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe protests began in Susangerd before spreading to Izeh and several neighborhoods in Ahvaz,\u201d said the source who requested anonymity. \u201cLarge numbers of security forces have been stationed around government offices, including the governor general\u2019s headquarters in Ahvaz.
