{"id":1741,"date":"2021-05-05T15:38:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T15:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1741"},"modified":"2021-05-07T15:39:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T15:39:12","slug":"two-brothers-of-executed-iranian-wrestler-fear-same-fate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1741","title":{"rendered":"Two Brothers of Executed Iranian Wrestler Fear Same Fate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/n\/navid-br.jpg\" \/>May 5, 2021 \u2013 Eight months after an\u00a0Iranian wrestler\u00a0was unjustly executed in Shiraz, his brothers Vahid and Habib Afkari remain in prolonged solitary confinement in the same prison where they\u2019ve also been tortured and threatened with execution, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) has learned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->\u201cThese brothers potentially witnessed the crimes committed against their brother and now they could also be executed to prevent them from speaking out,\u201d said CHRI Executive Director Hadi Ghaemi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cInstead of being able to grieve their loved one\u2019s death, they are at the mercy of Iranian authorities who act as though they could silence anyone with impunity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iranian wrestler Navid Afkari was\u00a0executed\u00a0in Adelabad Prison in September 2020 after being accused of killing a security guard during street protests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before being hanged, he had filed a complaint stating that he had been tortured to provide\u00a0the false confession\u00a0that was used to convict him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a recent\u00a0audio message\u00a0smuggled out of prison, Vahid Afkari said he was tortured and fears he will also be executed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI can only depend on reason and the law,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no other way [to save my life]. People of Iran, I\u2019m innocent!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The torture and other intimidation tactics imposed on the brothers to extract \u201cconfessions\u201d from them have been so intense that Vahid Afkari has reportedly attempted suicide twice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vahid and Habib Afkari\u2019s family members have stated that the brothers were subjected to various forms of psychological torture while being severely restricted from having contact with their relatives during visitations. Prison authorities have also denied the family\u2019s requests for information about the brothers\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The prolonged judicial process combined with the refusal to give the brothers\u2019 lawyers access to their case files has increased pressure on the brothers to make false confessions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On April 30, 2021, Persian-language media outlets\u00a0reported\u00a0that two senior officials speaking on behalf of Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi offered the Afkari brothers freedom after serving one year in prison if they admitted to committing murder\u2014or face execution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vahid and Habib Afkari were convicted of \u201cenmity against God\u201d and participation in anti-state street protests. Habib has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison and Vahid to 25 years in prison.
