High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has strongly condemned the Iranian execution Thursday of Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee, the country\u2019s fourth confirmed execution of a child offender in 2020.\u00a0Rezaiee was 16 when he was arrested in 2007 for alleged involvement in the fatal stabbing of a man during a group fight.\u00a0 The high commissioner\u2019s spokeswoman, Ravina Shamdasani, tells VOA Rezaiee was detained while in the hospital for injuries from the fight and reportedly was coerced into confessing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are credible allegations that he was in fact beaten up.\u00a0 He was beaten with batons, with fists.\u00a0 He was kicked,” Shamdasani said. “He was forced into confessing the crime and he was also denied access to medical care for his injuries.\u00a0 He was then held in solitary confinement, without access to his family, without access to a lawyer and, you know, repeatedly taken for interrogations.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shamdasani says Rezaiee spent 13 years on death row.\u00a0 She says his family was told Wednesday he would be executed early Thursday morning.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis year, they have executed four child offenders.\u00a0 And, according to the figures that we have, Iran executes more child offenders than any other country,” Shamdasani said. “And what is really worrying is that we understand that there are at least 84 more child offenders who are currently on death row in Iran.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amnesty International says 149 executions of juvenile offenders have taken place in 10 countries since 1990.\u00a0 Those countries include China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Sudan, Sudan, the United States and Yemen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Penal Code allows for the execution for serious crimes of boys who are at least 15 years old and for girls who are at least 9.\u00a0 The execution of child offenders is prohibited under international law and Iran is obliged to abide by this prohibition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Human rights chief Bachelet is urging Iranian authorities to halt all executions of child offenders and to review their cases in line with international human rights law.<\/span><\/p>\n
