Amnesty International said the charges against Ahmadreza Djalali are unfounded and Sweden spoke to Iran about his case.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Nov 25, 2020-Al-Monitor – A leading human rights group and the Swedish government are demanding Iran halt the imminent execution of an Iranian-Swedish scientist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahmadreza Djalali is now in solitary confinement in Iran\u2019s notorious\u00a0Evin Prison<\/a>\u00a0and has been told by prosecutors he will be put to death within a week,\u00a0Amnesty International said<\/a>\u00a0in a statement on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The London-based organization\u2019s deputy director for the Middle East said the decision constitutes a human rights violation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is appalling that despite repeated calls from\u00a0UN human rights experts\u00a0to quash Ahmadreza Djalali\u2019s death sentence and release him, the Iranian authorities have instead decided to push for this irreversible injustice,\u201d said Diana Eltahawy,\u00a0citing a document<\/a>\u00a0from the UN\u2019s Human Rights Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

Djalali was sentenced to death for \u201ccorruption on earth\u201d in December 2017, according to Amnesty International. The organization said the charge is vague and his conviction was based on confessions obtained by torture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sweden\u2019s Foreign Minister Ann Linde spoke to her Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, about Djalali\u2019s case and called on Iran to halt the execution,\u00a0Linde said in a tweet<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday. She did not provide further details.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian government responded to Linde by saying Iran does not accept interference in judicial matters and that Sweden\u2019s information on the case is \u201cincorrect,\u201d\u00a0Reuters<\/a>\u00a0reported. Iran\u2019s state-run\u00a0Press TV<\/a>\u00a0reported that Linde and Zarif spoke about the\u00a0Iran nuclear deal<\/a>\u00a0during their call Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran frequently receives criticisms from Western governments over the detention of their citizens there. On Wednesday, Australian-British academic\u00a0Kylie Moore-Gilbert<\/a>\u00a0was reportedly released from prison following protests from the Australian and British governments.<\/span><\/p>\n
