{"id":1674,"date":"2020-10-21T11:25:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T11:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1674"},"modified":"2020-10-21T11:26:01","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T11:26:01","slug":"nasrin-sotoudeh-transferred-to-notorious-gharchak-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1674","title":{"rendered":"Nasrin Sotoudeh Transferred to Notorious Gharchak Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Human Rights Lawyer\u2019s Health in Serious Danger<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/n\/nasrin-setodeh-10.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"564\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>Doctors Say Hospitalization Required, Instead Sotoudeh Moved to Iran\u2019s Most Dangerous Prison<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">October 20, 2020 \u2014\u00a0Nasrin Sotoudeh, the imprisoned human rights attorney, has been moved to the notoriously harsh\u00a0Gharchak Prison\u00a0(also spelled Qarchak) in the Iranian city of Varamin, south of Tehran, despite grave medical issues that require her hospitalization, her husband, Reza Khandan said today, October 20, 2020.<!--more-->Sotoudeh, who has serious cardiac and pulmonary complications after being on a\u00a0hunger strike\u00a0from August 11 to September 26, 2020 to protest the continued imprisonment of Iran\u2019s political prisoners, will now continue serving her 38-year sentence (12 years of which she must serve before becoming eligible for release) at one of Iran\u2019s most dangerous and inhumane prisons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In an interview with CHRI on October 20, 2020, Reza Khandan, Sotoudeh\u2019s husband, stated: \u201cWhen Nasrin\u2019s heart condition became worse, she needed an angiography. We have been waiting these past few days to prepare for her transfer to the hospital [from Evin Prison]. Today the authorities told her to get ready to go to the hospital but then she ended up in Gharchak Prison. The transfer was not announced by the prison authorities but by Nasrin herself who was allowed to make a brief phone call to give the news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cBy denying Nasrin Sotoudeh critically needed medical care, and instead moving her to Gharchak Prison, known for its horrific conditions, the authorities in Iran are placing Nasrin Sotoudeh\u2019s life in immediate danger,\u201d said Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cSending Sotoudeh to sit behind bars alongside common criminals in conditions much more dangerous than Evin Prison is a desperate and transparent attempt to punish her\u2014and to risk her life if they cannot silence her and her family any other way,\u201d Ghaemi added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">CHRI calls for the immediate transfer of Nasrin Sotoudeh to hospital where she can receive full and proper treatment with the consent of her family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Husband: \u201cThe authorities used trickery and deceit to transfer a prisoner\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Khandan told CHRI: \u201cThe authorities used trickery and deceit to transfer a prisoner, even though there was no need to do so. Nasrin didn\u2019t have any of her belongings with her since she had only prepared to go to the hospital. She does not have her warm clothes and given her heart condition, we\u2019re very worried for her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThese kinds of behaviors by the judicial authorities toward Nasrin is the continuation of a policy of pressure and intimidation against our family \u2013 from my\u00a0daughter\u2019s detention\u00a0and continuing persecution, to stricter restrictions on Nasrin\u2019s basic rights in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe reason for these harsh acts and pressures is Nasrin\u2019s recent\u00a0hunger strike\u00a0and its impact in raising international awareness about Iran\u2019s political prisoners. By resorting to deceit and trickery to transfer a prisoner, the judiciary has only added to its notoriety among the public.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Prison Doctors \u201cShocked\u201d at Sotoudeh\u2019s Return to Prison<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sotoudeh was hospitalized on September 19 as her medical condition deteriorated\u2014only to be\u00a0sent back to Evin prison\u00a0on September 23, despite her worsening condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On September 26, 2020, when Sotoudeh ended her hunger strike, Khandan\u00a0relayed\u00a0that the prison doctors were \u201cshocked\u201d that she had been returned to prison in her condition, and \u201cstrongly protested,\u201d as during her hospitalization severe cardiac issues were identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Khandan also reported that during her hospitalization from September 19 to September 23, Sotoudeh was exposed to multiple guards who later tested positive for COVID-19. He stated that doctors outside the hospital who reviewed her tests consider her transfer back to prison as \u201ca deliberate attempt to put her life in danger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Khandan also\u00a0said\u00a0on Facebook today, October 20, 2020 that \u201cThree weeks ago, after being hospitalised, she was taken back to the prison before completing her full treatment. According to experts, she had to be transferred once again to the hospital for an urgent heart examination and angiography, but instead the Evin authorities have relocated her to Qarchak prison, where the healthcare and prison detention conditions are even worse than Evin prison.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Nasrin Sotoudeh\u00a0is in prison for her peaceful work defending basic civil and political rights in Iran.
