{"id":1661,"date":"2020-09-12T14:02:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T14:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2022-07-06T13:42:11","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T13:42:11","slug":"execution-of-navid-afkari-irans-judiciary-is-a-tool-of-political-repression-and-violence-and-a-threat-to-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1661","title":{"rendered":"Execution of Navid Afkari: \u201cIran\u2019s Judiciary is a Tool of Political Repression and Violence and a Threat to the People\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/n\/navid-afkari-.jpg\" width=\"377\" height=\"389\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Champion Wrestler Executed despite Evidence of Torture and Innocence<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>September 12, 2020\u2014The execution of\u00a0Navid Afkari, the 27-year-old champion wrestler, by hanging at sunrise today in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, demonstrates the Iranian judiciary\u2019s complete disregard for law, justice and international standards of due process.<!--more-->The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) condemns in the strongest terms the unlawful and tragic execution of Afkari, and released the following statement today by its executive director, Hadi Ghaemi:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision by Iran\u2019s judiciary to execute wrestling champion Navid Afkari shows yet again that Iran\u2019s judiciary is a tool of political repression and violence\u2014and it is a threat to the Iranian people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfkari was denied any semblance of due process and a fair trial. There is\u00a0evidence\u00a0that he did not commit the crime he was accused of and his statement that he was tortured into giving a false confession was never investigated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis lawful participation in the protests that swept Iran in 2018 effectively signed his death warrant. The authorities are determined to stamp out any peaceful dissent and protest and are increasingly issuing death sentences to enforce this repression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the international community remains silent in face of the injustice we saw against Afkari, we will see more state violence against peaceful protestors and more lives will be unjustly and unlawfully lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran\u2019s judiciary and government bear full responsibility for the unlawful execution of Navid Akfari. Yet it must also be noted that the response of the International Olympic Committee and the United World Wrestling organization was weak and inadequate; they failed to uphold their own principles and regulations, thereby undermining their own viability. Sports federations must hold Iran accountable for its actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy deepest condolences to the family, friends and his colleagues of Navid Afkari, whose life was tragically and senselessly ended at age 27.
