{"id":1293,"date":"2018-08-23T16:17:46","date_gmt":"2018-08-23T16:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1293"},"modified":"2018-08-24T16:27:45","modified_gmt":"2018-08-24T16:27:45","slug":"too-little-too-late-iran-should-permanently-release-nazanin-zaghari-ratcilffe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iransos.com\/en\/?p=1293","title":{"rendered":"Too Little, Too Late: Iran Should Permanently Release Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcilffe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/iransos.com\/en\/photo\/2011\/n\/nazanin-zaghari-2\" width=\"716\" height=\"613\" \/>August 23, 2018 \u2013 The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) urges the Iranian Judiciary to turn the three-day furlough it has granted to\u00a0Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffeinto permanent and unconditional release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->\u201cThree days of temporary release after almost three years behind bars under bogus charges is far too little and too late,\u201d said CHRI\u2019s Executive Director Hadi Ghaemi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIran\u2019s judiciary should immediately free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe to end the tragic saga she and her family have been suffering through,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two and a half years after being arrested by Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in April 2016, the Iranian British dual national was released on an unexpected and temporary leave from prison on August 23, 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHer lawyer is hopeful this can be extended,\u201d said Zaghari-Ratcliffe\u2019s husband, Richard Ratcliffe, on August 23 in an email sent to CHRI, adding that she is currently with her three-year-old daughter, Gabriella, and her parents in the city of Damavand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis was a very happy surprise after a number of false dawns recently, which had been increasingly unsettling,\u201d he added before thanking the UK\u2019s new Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt \u201cfor all his recent efforts and considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is standard practice in Iran for political prisoners to receive extensions or permanent release after being granted a brief leave from prison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zaghari-Ratcliffe is not under house arrest but has been prohibited from giving interviews, leaving the country, or visiting the UK embassy in Iran as conditions of her furlough. She was also required to sign a document stating that she would return to the prison after the furlough period ends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Free Nazanin campaign, Zaghari-Ratcliffe\u2019s father had asked that she be given furlough for a month (her legal entitlement is currently 29 days) so that she and Gabriella could rebuild their relationship. The deputy prosecutor responded,\u00a0\u201cLet us take her out first, and then decide on a number of days after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On July 24, 2018, a judge had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/click.icptrack.com\/icp\/relay.php?r=58654548&amp;msgid=959543&amp;act=1FNF&amp;c=333585&amp;destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iranhumanrights.org%2F2018%2F07%2Fjudge-tells-nazanin-zaghari-ratcliffe-that-shell-remain-imprisoned-until-uk-pays-debt-to-iran%2F\">told<\/a>\u00a0Zaghari-Ratcliffe that she would not be permanently released until the UK paid an old debt it owes Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cJudge Abbasi has confirmed what we have been suspecting for some time,\u201d said Ratcliffe in a statement sent to CHRI at the time. \u201cHis statements confirm that Nazanin is being held in prison as a bargaining chip. But to express it so bluntly is shocking to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A former staff member of the Thomson Reuters Foundation in London, Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested by the IRGC\u2019s Intelligence Organization in April 2016 and ultimately sentenced to five years in prison under unspecified espionage charges in a trial severely lacking in due process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She became eligible for release according to Iranian law in November 2017.
