Abbas Edalat, an Iranian British academic and antiwar activist<\/p><\/div>\n

April 25, 2018\u2014Abbas Edalat, an Iranian British academic and antiwar activist based in London, has been detained in Iran since April 15, 2018, after being arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIran\u2019s continued arbitrary arrests of dual nationals without transparency and the denial of due process is extremely concerning,\u201d said the Center for Human Rights in Iran\u2019s (CHRI\u2019s) Executive Director Hadi Ghaemi.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranian Judiciary and the security establishment, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, are responsible for the well-being of these detainees,\u201d added Ghaemi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edalat\u2019s family posted bail for him on April 21 but the Revolutionary Court in Tehran claimed there was a problem with the documentation and ordered them to restart the process on April 25. Edalat remains detained as of today.<\/span><\/p>\n

A verified source with direct knowledge of the case told CHRI that the IRGC raided Edalat\u2019s home in Tehran and confiscated his belongings, including his computer, CDs and notebooks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edalat, a professor of computer science and mathematics at the Imperial College in London, had traveled to Iran from his home in London at an unknown date to attend an academic worship.<\/span><\/p>\n

In April 2017, Edalat was awarded the Imperial College of London\u2019s LICS 2017\u00a0Test-of-Time Award<\/a>\u00a0for a computer science paper he had co-authored with another academic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three months earlier, Edalat had\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0a university-focused website that he had stopped submitting research papers to US conferences after US President Donald Trump issued a\u00a0travel ban<\/a>\u00a0on mostly Muslim-majority countries, including Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edalat is the founder of the US-based\u00a0Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran<\/a>\u00a0(CASMII), an advocacy group that strongly opposes foreign intervention in Iran. In previous years he had authored several\u00a0opinion pieces<\/a>\u00a0on the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least two other Iranian British dual nationals,\u00a0Kamran Foroughi<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe<\/a>, have been imprisoned in Iran since 2011 and 2016 respectively after being arrested by the IRGC.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are both\u00a0eligible for release<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The IRGC has arrested at least\u00a030 dual nationals<\/a>\u00a0since the signing of the Iranian nuclear deal in July 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n
