June 21, 2017\u2014Works by prominent Iranian-American artists were showcased to a packed house on June 14, the opening night of the \u201cBeyond the Ban\u201d art exhibition, a collaboration between the\u00a0Center for Human Rights in Iran<\/a>\u00a0(CHRI) and the\u00a0Susan Eley Fine Art gallery<\/a>\u00a0in New York City.<\/p>\n

The exhibition features the works of leading artists including\u00a0Shirin Neshat<\/a>,\u00a0Nicky Nodjoumi<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0Nahid Hagigat<\/a>. Ninety percent of the proceeds will benefit CHRI\u2019s work protecting and promoting human rights in Iran. The exhibit will run from June 14 to August 30.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to show the work of these brilliant artists\u2014and also to show the creative richness of the very people that the US travel ban on six Muslim-majority nations will keep out,\u201d said CHRI\u2019s executive director Hadi Ghaemi.<\/p>\n

\u201cArtists in Iran already face arbitrary laws and repressive practices that stifle freedom of expression,\u201d Ghaemi said. \u201cThe travel ban will only keep these gifted individuals from engaging with wider audiences\u2014and give the authorities in Iran a freer hand in insulating Iranian society from the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump\u2019s Executive Order 13769, which he has referred to as a \u201ctravel ban,\u201d would ban citizens from six Muslim-majority nations, including Iran, from traveling to the US for 90-days and halt the refugee program for 120 days. The ban has not gone into effect yet due to injunctions by two US federal courts.<\/p>\n

Renowned painter Nicky Nodjoumi, who curated the collection, said the participating artists \u201centhusiastically supported the cause.\u201d Non-donated works were also exhibited to highlight the \u201cdepth and the richness of the immigrant Iranian artistic community\u2019s contributions to American society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when cultural exchange is most important, immigrant Iranian artists confront two fronts of struggle: one against expulsion and the US travel ban, and one against censorship regulations imposed by the Iranian government,\u201d said Nodjoumi.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth are a violation of human rights and the \u2018Beyond the Ban\u2019 show displays the struggle of Iranian artists against both fronts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The exhibit demonstrates the rich stylistic and thematic variety of art being produced today by the vibrant community of Iranian artists living in the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn nations where human rights are abused, the arts and artists are often the first to suffer,\u201d\u00a0said gallery director Susan Eley. \u201cYet we express our most creative selves through the arts\u2014writing, fine art, theater, dance and music.\u201d<\/p>\n
