Student News
1) The Daftar-e-Tahkim-e Vahdat central council announced; over the past year, student disciplinary committees have issued verdicts for 300 students. Additionally, the supervisory committee on student publication has banned 57 student magazines. The University Supervisory Committee has also dissolved or suspended 35 student formations. Likewise, guild councils and cultural centers have faced extensive pressures and most of their programs have been cancelled. Many students have committed suicide in the past four months. Using drugs is increased in such way that experts believe, currently 150,000 students use drugs at least once a month. (Advar News, 2007.jan 13)

2) Aram Nosrat Poor, student activist of the Sanandaj University, was arrested by security guards and his house was also detected. (Mokerian Web log, 2007.Jan.13)
Student: Summoned and interrogated in courts
3) Elias Alipour, the secretary of Shahrood University’s Guild Council, was summoned to the university’s disciplinary committee following a complaint lodged by the chancellor. (Advar News, 2006.Dec.26)
4) The editors in charges of the student magazines Chromosome, Akharin Sangar, and Korso, were summoned to the disciplinary committee of the Science and Technology University. They were charged with publishing the articles against the public chastity, blasphemy and disturbing the public opinion. (Mehr, 2006.Dec.28)
5) Three members of the Ahwaz University Islamic Association central council were summoned to the disciplinary committee. They were sentenced to written reprimand in their educational dossier with the charge of disturbing the university order. Also four members of the General Council of Islamic Association of Ahwaz University were summoned to the disciplinary committee for disrupting order on campus. (Isna, 2006.Dec.31)
6) Eleven students of Shahre Kurd Medical Sciences University were summoned to the disciplinary committee they were charged wiHt making noise on “Yalda Night” celebrations. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.3)
7) Mohammad Mahdi Ahmadi ,the Shiraz university Islamic Association central council secretary was summoned to the disciplinary committee.He was charged with disturbing the university order and starting a strike. The complaint was lodged by the chancellor.(Isna.2007.Jan.8)
8) Farid Hashemi, the Tehran university Islamic Association of Democratic Students spokesman, Shahoo Rastegari,the editor in charge of the student magazine Khak; Pegah Hamze’ee, the editor in charge of student magazine Gioteen; and Yasser Mokhtari, Behzad Ahmadfar, Jamshid Ismaili, Vahid Moosavi, and Ahmad Moosavi, Tehran University students, were summoned to the disciplinary committee. Students: education deprivation
9) In an open letter, seventeen students declared that they were deprived for political and ideological reasons. Student signatories included Saeed Ardeshiri, Mahdi Aminizadeh, Vahid Pour Esmaeeli, Zahra Janipour, Hamed Hassandoost, Farhad Zad Ali Fard, Roozbeh Riyazi Moqaddam, Salar Saket, Gharib Sajjadi, Paymon Aref, Mansoor Ezzati, Hannan Azizi, Bani Taraf, Tohid Alizadeh, Mohsen Fatehi, Yashar Qajar, Siyamak Karimi, and Shooresh Moradi. Students: issued sentences
10) Aso Saleh and Chia Hijazi, managing director and editor of the student magazine Deng were sentenced to four months suspended jail in branch no.101 of Sanandaj province penal court. .They were charged with publishing lies with the aim of disturbing public opinion (Isna, 2006.Dec.26)
11) Four students of Sabzevar’ University were tried at the university disciplinary committee .they were charged with disturbing the university order and staging an illegal gatherings in protest of Tohid Ghafarzadeh’s murder. The sentences are as follows: Ahmad Noor Husseini, two semesters’ suspension; Hasan Soheilifard, one semester suspension; Saeed Qorbanian, one semester suspension in case of recurrence; and Fereidoon Nazari, one semester suspension in case of recurrence. In addition, a number of students received written reprimands in their educational dossiers. (Advar news, 2006.Dec.27)
12) The disciplinary committee issued written reprimands in educational dossiers and charged fines to nine students of Tabriz Technical University. (Isna, 2006.Dec.27)
13) Rasoul Jafari, Urumiyeh University student, was sentenced to six months suspended imprisonment with the charge of acting against the security of state in branch no.9 of the province Revolutionary Court. (Isna, 2006.Dec.31)
14) Suleiman Mohammadi, Samira Dashtiyan, and Marziyeh Mahmoodi, students of Allameh Tabatabaee University were charged with disrupting university order. Mr. Mohammadi was sentenced to two semesters’ suspension, and Ms. Dashtiyan and Ms. Mahmoodi were each sentenced to one semester suspensions from school. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.1)
15) Eight students of Sanandaj University were summoned to the disciplinary committee with the charge of taking part in an illegal gathering, also encouraging other students to participate and disturbing university order. Their names and sentences are as follows:
16) Sooran Husseini, director in charge of Havari student magazine and director of the Pre Committee of the Democratic Alliance of Kurd Students, received two semesters’ suspension.
17) Kaveh Rahmani, member of the Havari editorial board, received one semester suspension and exile.
18) Paymon Ne’mati, member of the Democratic Alliance of Kurd Students, received one semester suspension and exile.
19) Ihsan Ahmadi, member of the Democratic Alliance of Kurd Students, received one semester suspension and exile.
20) Eco Qeisari, editor-in-chief of Havari, received one semester suspension and exile.
21) Koorosh Morab and Khorosh Elahi members of the Democratic Alliance of Kurdish Students received a written reprimand in their educational dossier.(Advar news.2007.Jan.6)
22) Amir Kabir University Chancellor expelled Matin Meshkin, member of the university Islamic Association (Ilna, 2007.Jan.9)
23) Vahid Amini, student at Urumiyeh’s Technical Institute, was sentenced to four months suspension imprisonment in province Revolutionary Court. He was charged with propaganda against the state, supporting the pan-Turkism, and distributing flyers promoting the country’s disintegration. 24) Tehran University student Ali Reza Biyareh received written reprimand from the disciplinary committee for taking part in an objecion. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.15)
25) Mohammad Alian the Hamedan Medical Sciences University Student and founder of “He Zhar Center,” was sentenced to one semester suspension with the charge of causing unrest and destroying public property.(Ilna.2007.Jan.17)
26) Morteza Eslahchi, the Allameh Tabatabaee University’s Islamic Association secretary, was suspended for one semester by the disciplinary committee.He was charged with trespassing into the College of Management, delivering an illegal speech, and inciting students to ditch school when another student was died. Bans on student publications:
27) The Student Publication Moj Sevvom, with the editor in charge of Hamid Reza Behnia was banned under the order of the supervisory committee on student publications (Ilna, 2006.Dec.27)
28) Urumiyeh University Student magazine Akhar Soo, was banned after the first issue. The paper was charged with disrupting national unity and distorting history of Iranian Turks. (Committee for Defence of the Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan –ASMAK, 27.Jan.14)
29) The Amirkabir University Student Publications Ta’me Azadi, with the editor in charge of Ali Kargar, was banned with the charge of denying Velayat-e Faqih (supreme leadership) and insulting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This paper covered topics related to democracy, human rights, as well as student associations and political rights. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.15)
Preventions on student’s formation:
30) The Board Overseeing Student Groups rescinded the permit of Sabzevar University Students’ Islamic Association. This association has been closed down by the University Supervisory Committee. (Advar News, 2006.Dec.23)
31) Sistan Baluchistan University Student Islamic Association Supervisory committee ordered the suspension on the activities of the student Islamic Association of Economy and Administrative science. Collage (Advar News, 2006.Dec.24)
32) Islamic Association of Students of Hamedan’s Boo Ali Sina University was dissolved under the order of the Student Association Supervisory committee. (Advar News, 12/28/06)
33) Arman Group at Tabriz Azad University was banned for six months under the order of the Central Board Overseeing Student Groups with the charge of publishing an article about Sheikh Mohammad Khiyabani. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.23)
34) Activities of the student Islamic Association of Shahre Kurd University were suspended for six months. They were charged with holding ceremonies marking Students’ Day and “Yalda Night” events. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.12)
Bans on Films, Books, Websites, and Civil Organizations:
35) The Committee Overseeing Cultural and Artistic Centers at Mashhad’s Bureau of Culture and Islamic Guidance issued warnings to some calligraphy, music, drawing and film making institutes, and five publicity centers. Also over the past month, 27 centers have been sealed, while 17 more have received warning notices (Ilna, 2006.Dec.29)
36) Iran news website was filtered following a complaint lodged by Esfandiar Rahim Moshaee, vice president and head of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization. . Iran news’ managing director Meysam Zaman Abadi and its editor Mohammad Zommorrodian were arrested by security guards and released on bail after questioning. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.31)
37) The Filtering Committee filtered an Amir kabir university news site. This is the third site at Amir kabir that has been filtered. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.31)
38) A non-governmental organization known as “Iran’s National Unity Association,” based in Isfahan, was shut down by security guards. Ceremonies honouring Forugh Farrokhzad (Iranian poet) were banned additionally, security forces closed down Fasa Township’s “Shirin Academic Center” which was established by an Iranian professor who had recently returned to the country from the U.S. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.6)
39) The Filtering Committee also filtered the “One Million Signatures Campaign” website. This campaign was spearheaded in Iran by women’s rights activists. (Amirkabir News, 2007.Jan.9)
40) The Student Committee to Defend Political Prisoners’ site hosted by “Mihan Blog” was completely removed from the server on the orders of Iran’s Telecommunication Censorship Center. (Student Committee to Defend Political Prisoners, 2007.Jan.15)
41) The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance cancelled the permanent print permit for Najaf Darya Bandari’s translation of William Faulkner’s, As I Lay Dying. The translated version was first published in 1992 by Cheshmeh Publishing Co. (Isna, 2007.Jan 17)
42) Quoting officials in charge, Akbar A’lami, MP from Tabriz, has noted that officials have filtered 10 million sites. One of the founders of Rasa declared, “We have to filter 13 million sites.” (Etemad, 2007.Jan.18)
43) Ali Farahbakhsh, a journalist of the banned Sharq Daily and a member of the Journalists’ Guild, was arested at the airport on 25 Nov. returning from a conference. He was interrogated at Tehran’s Revolutionary court. (Ilna, 2007.Jan 20)

44) The Hemmat Weekly, with the editor in charge of Mohsen Davood Abadi Farahani, was banned. It was charged with insulting the authorities.(ISNA, 12/25/06)
45) “Rooze Haft,” the special edition of Hamshahri Daily.was banned by the press supervisory committee (Khorasan, 2007.Jan.2)
46) Journalist and national-religious activist Taqi Rahmani was banned from leaving the country to take part in Denmark’s Pen Association meeting. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.20)
Journalists Summoned to Court
47) The former head of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s News Agency (IRNA), Ahmad Khadem ul-Melleh, was summoned to Branch 6 of Government Employees Court under the accusation of disturbing public opinion. Charges against him were filed by the Public Prosecutor. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.25)
48) Kurdistan’s banned Payame Mardom Weekly’s political desk editor Ejlal Qavami, women’s page editor Tonya Kaboodvand, and economic desk editor Kaveh Hussein Panahi were summoned to Sanandaj’s Islamic Revolutionary Court Branch no.1 .They were charged with publishing lies , Blasphemy and disturbing public opinion. 49) Iraj Ebadi, former editor of Asoo and Karaftoo Weeklies, was summoned to Sanandaj’s Court Branch no. He was charged with publishing lies. He had formerly been questioned for writing a story on the serial murderings published in Kurdistan’s banned Payame Mardom Weekly. He was released on bail. (Mokerian Weblog, 12/31/06)
50) Hussein Ahmadi Niyaz and Jalil Azadikhah, managing director and editor of the banned Asoo Weekly, were summoned to the Kurdistan Penal Court with the charge of publishing lies for disturbing public opinion and acting against national security. (Mokerian, 2007.Jan.17)
Journalists interrogated
51) Ghulam Hussein Islami Far, former managing director of Iran Daily, was summoned to Branch no.10 of Government Employees’ Court .with the charge of spreading lies and publishing falsities. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.26)
52) Farhad Amin Poor, Saman Suleimani, and Reza Alipour, editorial staff of Roozheh Lat Weekly were interrogated at Branch no. 4 of Sanandaj province Public and Revolutionary Court .With the charge of acting agaist the national security. After each being in jail for a month, these three journalists were released on bail. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.31)
Journalists trialed
53) Journalists and bloggers, Roozbeh Mir Ebrahimi and Shahram Rafi’zadeh, were prosecuted at Tehran’s Branch 1059 Court. They were charged with helping establish a group to disrupt domestic security, campaigning against the state, spreading rumors to create public worry, and interviewing with foreign radios. 54) Blogger and Etemad Daily’s political desk editor, Roozbeh Mir Ibrahimi, who was detained in 2004, published his defense proceedings following a closed door trial. . He said he was forced to write a statement of repentance, which was published by the Public Prosecutor’s Office through the Fars and doing a televised interview. Elsewhere in his defence, he maintained that the Public Prosecutor told him, “As it is, you will get a 15 year jail term, but if Shirin Ebadi represents you in court, you will get 20 years.” The Public Prosecutor then asked Ibrahimi to write a statement against Shirin Ebadi, which he did. Mir Ibrahimi went on to say that after the Majles (Parliament) Article 90 Commission released its report on Zahra Kazemi’s death in Evin Prison, Tehran’s Public Prosecutor warned all the dallies that they would be shut down if they carried the report. In a matter of few minutes, Zahra Kazemi’s story was pulled off all the dailies. He stated that he accepted the charge of having an affair with a female journalist under torture. In conclusion, he said that after being released he denied all the forced repentance and involuntary statements he was forced to make in the televised interviews. Tehran’s Public Prosecutor said, “Every day people die in accidents. You can be one of them.” (Advar News, 2006.Dec.27)
55) Mansoor Mozaffari, the chief in charge of Aftab Yazd Daily, was tried in branch no.76 of Tehran penal court under the accusation of publishing lies, creating rifts in the community by raising ethnic issues, and inciting individuals and groups to act against national security, integrity, and interests of the state. 56) Ahmad Ali Rezaee, the chief in charge of Payam Hamoon Monthly, was tried in Tehran’s Penal Court Branch 76 under the accusation of abusing the picture of women, spreading vice, and publishing pictures against the public chastity. (Isna, 207.Jan.8)
57) Ali Mohammad Jahani, the chief in charge of the Armaghan Weekly, published in North Khorasan Province, was tried in Bojnoord Penal Court Branch no.1 with the charge of not abiding by Islamic guidelines. (Irna, 2007.Jan.10)
58) Seyyed Mohsen Ashrafi the chief in charge of the banned daily Bonyan, was tried in branch no.1083 of Tehran public court. .He was charged with publishing lies, propaganda against the state, calumny, and insult. (Ilna., 2007.Jan.14)
Sentences issued by courts
59) Davood Bahrami Siyavoshani the chief in charge, of banned daily Payam-e Azadi, was tried at Branch 1083 of Tehran’s Public Court. He was charged with publishing lies for disturbing public opinion and calumny. He was sentenced to pay a $500 fine and was banned from journalistic activities for a year. (Isna, 2007.Jan.9)
Political, Cultural, Social Activists
60) Seyyed Kamal Husseini, a teacher, staged a strike in objection to the decisions made by the director of Central Bureau of Education. Husseini was beaten by security guards and was taken to hospital (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization – RMMK, 2006.Dec.26)
61) Plains clothes security officials using stones and bricks broke the huge windows of Tooti Press where Etemad Melli Daily is published. They assaulted the employees with glass pieces and injured several of them. (Etemad Melli, 207.Jan.10)
62) Several faculty members and employees of the Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences have been fired or forced to retire prematurely. Among them are heart surgeon Dr. Mohammad Naqshbandi, general surgeon Dr. Ja’far Moballeghi, Dr. Manuchehr Rashidian, Dr. Mo’laee, Ms. Ferasat Ardalan, Engineer Mozaffar Firoozmanesh, Ms. Parvin Manaseki, and Hooshang Zandi. 63) The non-governmental supervisory committee on news agencies issued a statement asking all news sites without news agency permits to change their logo within 72 hours and to abstain from using the term “news agency” to refer to themselves. 64) M-L, H-B, A-M, and R-H were summoned to Ahwaz’s Revolutionary Court, Branch 1.They were charged with acting against national security, propaganda against the state, and carrying arms. They were detained for three months and later were released on bail. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.15)

65) Reza Kermani, member of the High Council of the Pan Iran Party, was tried at- Karaj’s Revolutionary Court, Branch 1.He was charged with publishing a book named ‘The Music of Blood’ penned by Mohammad Reza Ameli Tehrani. (Student Committee of Human Rights Reporters, 2007.Dec.24,)
66) Jila Bani Yaqoob, editor of the web-magazine Kanoon Zanan Iran and director of the social and women’s group of Sarmayeh Daily, was tried at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, Branch 15 .She was charged with acting against the national security, propaganda against the state, and participating in illegal gatherings. 67) Abulfazl Jahandar and Masood Derakhshandi, former student activists, who have been in Evin Prison for the past five months, were tried behind closed doors at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court Branch 6.They were charged with acting against national security and propaganda against the state (Ilna, 2007.Jan.20)

68) Writer Shahram Qavami,After a weeklong detention at the Information Bureau, was transferred to Ward 7 of Sanandaj’s public jail. He was charged with insulting authorities (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization – RMMK, 2006.Dec.30)
69) Fa’iq Zolfaghari was arrested by security guards in Sanandaj and his house was searched..(Mokerian Weblog, 2006.Dec.30)
70) Ibrahim Shoorbaee, member of Kurdistan’s Human Rights Organization, was arrested by Security forces, his house was inspected and some books and posters were confiscated. (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization – RMMK, 2007.Jan.3)
71) Human rights activist Dr. Hessam Firoozi was arrested under the charge of endangering national security by providing medical care for detained student Ahmad Batebi. His arrest warrant was issued by Tehran’s Revolution Court Branch 14. He was detained at Evin Prison’s Ward 209. He is banned from having friends and family visit. Branch 14 of Tehran Public Prosecutor’s Office set a $5000 bail but even then refused to accept it once posted. (Ilna, 2007.Jan.16)
72) Ahmad Tavakkoli, director of Research Center of the Islamic Consultative Assembly noted that a 37 year old man was detained by security forces at the Majlis Research Center on the charge of collaborating with Iran’s Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO). (Ilna, 2007.Jan.9)
73) Azerbaijan’s national activists, Khodayar Teymoori, Salman Sarkhosh, and Enliyaz Yekaneli, were arrested a month ago by Information Bureau agents. They were questioned and tortured at the Information Bureau jail. They were transferred to the general ward at the Urumiyeh Prison. 74) Person who claimed to be the 14th Imam was arrested two months ago in Qom along with 55 of his disciples. (Kayhan News, 2007.Jan.14)
75) Fereydoon Fayzizadeh and Ali Reza Esfandiari, Gonabadi dervishes from Neka Township, were arrested by security guards. (Ilna 2007.Jan.16)
76) Saleh Molla Abasi and Faraj Noori, Azerbaijan’s national activists were arrested by Ahar Township’s security Guards five days ago. (Advar News, 2007.Jan.17)

77) Koroosh Ranjbar, an hourly-paid teacher in Dehgalan, and his brother, Zahed Ranjbar, were each sentenced to one year in prison by Sanandaj’s Revolutionary Court Branch no.2 for political activities. (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization – RMMK, 2006.Dec.26)
78) Hussein Dowlas was sentenced to one year imprisonment in Saqus province revolutionary court branch no.1, under the accusation of having political activity and involvement with Kurdish parties. (Kurdistan Human Rights Organization – RMMK, 2006.Dec.25)
79) Saber Roshan was sentenced to four month imprisonment under the accusation of having for political activities. (Mokerian Web log, 2007.JAN.8)
80) Paiman navadinian, a member of the Kurdistan’s Teachers’ Guild, was charged with reading Sanandaj teachers’ statement on Teachers’ Day. Kurdistan Province’s Administrative Violations Committee sentenced him to two years exile in Velis Village in Zanjan Province. (Ayandeh Nou, 2007.Jan.9)
81) Salah Ganji was sentenced to one year imprisonment and was transferred to Darya Prison in Urumiyeh province. He was charged with objecting to murdering of Shovaneh Qaderi and acting against national security. (Human Rights Activists in Iran, 2007.Jan.17)
82) Mohammad Partovi, a 25 year old student has been in prison for the past 9 months under the accusation of acting against national security. He is also sentenced to two years imprisonment, $31,000 cash fine, and 74 lashes with the charge of injuring a security agent in Sardasht Township eight years ago. Political Prisoners
83) Abdullah Mo’meni, speaker of Islamic Iran’s Graduates Organization, noted, “Kheirullah Derakhshandi, Abulfazl Jahandar, and Keyvan Ansari, former student activists, have been in prison for more than four months.” They have been denied a lawyer, visits with family, access to phone, and are not allowed to go outside their cells. He further stated that such unjustifiably prolonged detention is indicative of the fact that political prisoners are denied their basic human rights. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.26)
84) Keyvan Rafi’ee, a human rights activist, has been in solitary confinement since July 9. He was tried behind closed doors and without representation in Tehran’s Revolution Court Branch 13 under the accusation of acting against national security and disturbing public opinion (Student Committee of Human Rights Reporters, 2006).Dec.27)
85) Blogger and political activist Kiyanoosh Sanjari, who was detained along with another 100 people during Ayatollah Borojerdi’s arrest, was released after 80 days with a $100,000 bail. Sanjari has been arrested six times by information and security agents between the years 2000 and 2006. (Student Committee of Human Rights Reporters, 2006.Dec.27)
86) Abbas Lessani has been on hunger strike since Friday Dec.31 ,objecting the pressures inflicted by the Ministry of Information and Revolution Court in Ward 7 of Ardebil’s prison (Committee for Defense of the Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan –ASMAK, 2007.Jan.14)
87) Three students of Ahwaz’s Chamran University, Hani Bavi, Lafteh Sarkheh, and Qasem Karshavi, were tried at Branch 13 of Khuzestan Province’s Appeals Court with the charge of acting against the national security and propaganda against the state They were sentenced to exile: Hani Bavi for 11 years, Lafteh Sarkheh for ten years and four months, and Qasem Karshavi for three years. Worker situation
88) “100 employees of Kian Sarang Company have not received their pays since the start of this year.” (Ilna., 2006.Dec.22)
89) “60 employees of Taleqani Wood Industries Co. have not received their pays for the past four months.” (Ilna, 2006.Dec.23)
90) 80 employees of Fars Lamp Company have not received their pays for a year. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.23)
91) 14 employees of Kurdistan’s University of Medical Sciences have been fired. These workers were gathered in front of the Governor General’s Office in protest (Ilna, 2006.Dec.24)
92) More than 100 employees of Tehran’s Firoozgar Hospital with more than ten years’ work experience have not received their December pays. (Ilna, 2006.Dec.24)
